Monday Afternoon - Meditative Hatha Yoga and Sound Bath with Ian Marshall

Meditative Hatha Yoga and Sound Bath with ian Marshall

This is a session of Hridaya Hatha Yoga which is a meditative style of practice where you will be guided into postures with the intention of becoming more internally focused and really witnessing all that is moving in you.
It is a practice of moving towards "being" more and more; helping us in meditation by creating a bridge between our physical body and our essence, that part of us that can observe our thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations.

We will start with some slightly more dynamic movement as a warm up and then progress to holding asana for a period of time while observing our experience with an open attention.
There will be some sitting meditation as we draw the senses inward and I will guide you in quietening the mind and connecting with the energy of the heart.

Our time together will end with a profound period of relaxation as we allow our process to be integrated in even deeper stillness supported by the sound of the gong, singing bowls and other instruments.

Things to Bring/materials required: Please bring a yoga mat and blanket to get cosy during the sound bath. I will have some available.

Venue: The Round Tower, Black Swan Arts, Frome

Date: Monday 10 March

Biography:

Ian first stepped on the spiritual path about 15 years ago, after growing frustrated with the lack of contentment he felt through a successful career in the corporate world. Pursuing an interest in travel and discovery he went to India to volunteer with the Tibetan community in exile in Dharamsala and while he was there took in teachings with the Dalai Lama and then decided to study Tibetan Buddhism and yoga. His first 10 day silent retreat with the FPMT school was a revelation and the teachings resonated with him deeply. He travelled India and practiced yoga with numerous teachers in Rishikesh, Rajasthan and at the Sivananda Ashram in Kerala amongst other places. He continued his interest in Tibetan Buddhism with the one month November course at Kopan Monastery on the outskirts of Kathmandu, Nepal.
He did a month intensive course in Rishikesh learning yoga techniques and philosophy in great depth in a small group and it was through this experience that he was introduced to the Hridaya meditation technique which resonated with him more deeply than the practices he had learnt in the Buddhist school.
He travelled to Thailand where the teacher, Sahajananda, was delivering a ten day silent retreat and this experience was what changed a lot for him around his perception of reality and how this insight can be shared.
After attending more classes from the Hridaya school teacher Naseem Khakoo in London he decided to embark on the three month teacher training course at the school in Mazunte, Mexico.
This was a deep dive into the self, including two 10 day silent retreats as well as a dark room retreat and 500 hours of training and opportunities to share with peers.
After this the opportunity to share his practice arose in serendipitous circumstances when he began to lead classes at the Jamyang Buddhist centre in Kennington, London, an outpost of the same FPMT school he had first studied with.
His interest in sound healing started after finding the transformational sound of the gong in sound healings in London and at various festivals in the UK. He attended trainings with Sheila Whittaker and the Sound Healing Academy and has been part of several all night gong pujas as well as sharing the gong in various settings such as workshops, retreats and more recently regular sound journeys in Frome.

He's been involved in various other healing modalities over the years as well doing trainings in Chi Nei Tsang and Swedish massage, Reiki and Quantum Touch.

Other notable teachers he's studied with are Mantak Chia, the chi gung master in Thailand and Jan Day, whose 18 month Living Tantra training was an important step to integrate the deep meditation teachings of the heart with the relational techniques that are part of the therapeutic process that is Living Tantra.
